MAR BLUE: The Energy Transition in the Mediterranean Sea.

MAR BLUE 2022 FORUM

THE ENERGY TRANSITION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE NAUTICAL AND PORT INDUSTRY

The first edition of the Mar Blue forum, organised by Medvolt Marine in collaboration with the Balearic Marine Cluster and the Autoritat Portuària de Balears, was held on 27 September at the Institutional Headquarters of the Autoritat Portuària de Balears (Balearic Islands Port Authority).

The energy transition in the Balearic Sea is an opportunity to address climate change in the nautical and maritime sector of the islands and therefore of the Mediterranean Sea.

What do we understand by energy transition in the sea and what is the role of electrification in this process within the framework of the nautical and maritime sector?

Everything there is to know about the most important challenge of the 21st century is addressed in this sustainable nautical conference that highlights private sector companies with projects and solutions that are already working on the energy transition of the Balearic and Mediterranean Sea. Curbing environmental and climate impacts requires a change towards a decarbonised energy base.

The first panel discussion focuses on marinas which are frontally exposed to the consequences of climate change and, therefore, how they can adapt existing infrastructures to the new scenario and redefine the way they are designed and built, this fact constitutes one of the unavoidable challenges of the current port agenda based on the SDGs.

Speakers:

  • Isabel Teruel, Director of Operations, Port Adriano
  • Mar Vera, Alcudiamar
  • Corinna Graf ,CEO of Puerto Portals

The second panel discussion was dedicated to addressing sustainable nautical tourism, a sector in embryonic creation that represents yet another action to debate and offer maximum clarity on what type of packages and sustainable nautical tourism are fully aligned with the recommendations on the development of Responsible Tourism and conservation of the marine environment of the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) and the SDGs of the Paris 2030 Agenda.

Speakers:

  • Gabriel Ferragut Director of the St. Regis Mardavall Hotel.
  • Marco Mendoza CEO of TRUE WOLD

The last panel discussion, the emerging sustainable boating industry sector presented the development of several companies that already have actions and products on the market to give visibility to sustainable boating and 100% zero-emission electric boating,

Speakers:

  • Gonzalo Coterillo, CEO of the electric llaut shipyard Medvolt Marine
  • Carlos Puerta, from ESEA Propulsion,
  • Adria Fradera, CEO of Nauta Systems
  • Santi Mayol, President of APEAM and CEO of Barcos Azules.

On the other hand from the public institutions both the Dirección General de Energía and the Dirección General de Industria del Govern de les Illes Balears announced subsidy packages for this energy transition in the Balearic Sea.
