SOCIB: Researching the ocean, sharing the future
Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) is a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS), being the only one of its kind in the Balearic Islands, and is driven by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science and the Balearic Islands Regional Government. The main objective of the SOCIB is to develop scientific and technical knowledge, as well as products and services to make Mediterranean sea marine and coastal resources more sustainable and healthy, thus responding to the environmental, economic, and social needs of the Balearic Islands.
SOCIB observes and monitors the Mediterranean Sea in real time through a multi-platform observing system: high-frequency coastal radars, beach integral monitoring systems, gliders or autonomous underwater vehicles, lagrangian observation platforms, fixed oceanographic buoys, meteorological and sea level stations, and the research vessel.
Recreational navigation and the sustainability of the Balearic coast is possible
Recreational boating is one of the most important sectors within the tourist economy of the Balearic Islands. The number of berths in the Balearic Islands (more than 20,000) represents 5% of the total moorings in the Mediterranean Sea and 17% in Spain. Recreational boats anchor along the Balearic coast, which can produce negative impacts on the marine ecosystem. In this context, the SOCIB spatial analysis of the nautical carrying capacity allows establishing the physical limitations of the anchoring areas in the Balearic Islands, considering different spatial scenarios and anchoring hypotheses, aimed at preserving the environment and guaranteeing the well-being of users. We strategically contribute to the advancement of knowledge of the Mediterranean in the Balearic Islands through the SOCIB new building project
The SOCIB new building (planned for 2023) will be located in the Port of Palma and is part of the advances of the hub of Marine R&D&I of the Government of the Balearic Islands, in alliance with the Spanish National Research Council and the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The new building will contribute strategically to the advancement of science in the Balearic Islands, in a context of climate change and sustainability. The new headquarters will have 3,748 m2 and will consist of 3 floors and a basement, with a capacity for 120 workers, responding to the needs of this Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS). It will also respond to the SOCIB aim of becoming an active and dynamic platform favoring the generation of ideas and projects, as well as the encounter and collaboration between researchers and social and economic actors.
We research the western Mediterranean, focusing on areas of special scientific interest and of high ecological value, such as the Ibiza Channel, the Gulf of Lyon, the Alboran Sea, and the Algerian Basin. MEDCLIC
We transfer knowledge and facilitate decision-making by developing forecasting and supporting tools for safety at sea and for planning oceanographic cruises, among others.
We share our oceanographic and meteorological data and our scientific and technical production in open access, in line with the principles of the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) initiative.
In order to develop services that ensure ocean health and sustainability, we are internationally aligned with major ocean observation and forecasting stakeholders and key end-users, such as the marine industry.
We are committed to marine environmental awareness and education, as well as to the promotion of ocean literacy, in line with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
